These images come from The1999 Kia Asamiya Sketchbook. It was released by CPM manga in 1999. The comments next to the images are those of Kia Asamiya. I've only scanned the Steam Detectives sketches, but there are many more beautiful images in the book. Steam Detectives only makes up a very small fraction of the images. The compilation is only US$5 so I suggest you buy it. It's well worth looking at, and reading Asamiya's comments on them is interesting ^_^

The First Ever Steam Detectives' Sketch

I drew this right after I finished my first meeting about Steam Detectives. I drew the chief here as an old, bald guy. Goriki is also very raw.
Ultra Jump Cover

This was a cover for Ultra Jump. Originally I was going to draw Goriki down under Narutaki's feet. I was also going to draw an all steam background but everyone laughed at me. i had to agree. This isn't a steam magazine.
Steam Detectives Original Sountrack File 1 Jacket

This is the CD soundtrack for book file 1 from Ahueisha. it's about the Phantom, but Ling Ling is involved in this story as well, so that's why I drew her in the center.
Original Jump Cover (unused)

I drew her holding a gun here, but it didn't fir the image, so I changed it. The best way to catch a person's eye in a book store or comic shop is to have a cover of a woman looking at them.
Ultra Jump Cover: Goriki

This is the Goriki I wanted to draw under Narutaki's feet in the illustration on page 33. I only drew half of him in order to let them finish the rest with CG.
Marmit Prototype: Goriki 1

This was a rough sketch for the marmit prototype doll of Goriki. I didn't draw this for the anime version but I should have submitted it. I forget this even existed.
Marmit Prototype: Goriki 2

This is just a continuation from the last page's prototype. I thought this one came out nice.
Steam Press Rough

This is a rough sketch for Mr. Moriki who will do the actual drawing. I forgot this even existed.
Marmit Prototype: Shadow Bolt No. 1 Sketch 1 (top) and 2 (bottom)

This was also for the marmit prototype. The anime staff might be thinking "why didn't you give this to us?"

This is Shadow Bolt's back and face. Shadow Bolt 1 won't be in the manga anymore, but he could live on in the anime. That's always good to know.
Prize for SEGA: Super Deformed Narutaki

I drew this before I knew there would be an anime version. But this is not on the schedule for next year yet. Why not?
Prize for SEGA: Super Deformed Ling Ling

I want them to put this out soon. I think I remember them saying this would be a stuffed doll.
Prize for SEGA: Super Deformed Le Bread
Prize for SEGA: Super Deforemed Lang Lang
Prize for SEGA: Goriki

Even thought he's super deformed, he hasn't changed much.
Prize for SEGA: Shadow Bolt 1

There isn't much difference here either. I drew this in 997
Steam Detectives Piggy Bank Sketch

This is a rought sketch I did for a Ling Ling piggy bank which was supposed to be made. I even drew a slot for the coins. I saw the first prototype but Mr. M put a stop to this project. We (Studio Tron) and the manufacturer got in a bit of hot water over this. That's why you've never seen this bank.
Ultra Jump Pin-up

This is "Two Shot" of Ling Ling and Lang Lang. I really wanted to draw this one. So when they asked me to draw a pin-up, I already knew what it was going to be. At first, I drew them holding guns, but it just didn't look right, sp I drew them with their tools of the trade.
Jump Original Cover Rough

I drew this original cover for a special issue of Jump. I think this is a much more appropriate cover for a boy's manga than some photo of some girl wearing a cheap bikini. The telephone card with this illustration on it is super rare.
Cover fo Rought Vol. 1

At shis time, this is my favourite character, Ling Ling. I really enjoy drawing her. I hope you will enjoy Ling Ling and Steam Detectives as much as I do.
